Project Greenway

A diorama on display in a museum shows a green space and memorial to Hazel Johnson

A Reimagination of 130th Street

  • Care Space, 2nd Floor

  • Free

Project Greenway is a youth reimagination of a stretch of land in Altgeld Gardens on the South Side of Chicago. A collaboration between Collective Learning Lab and the students of Aldridge Elementary School, this project included a series of lessons, workshops, and field trips. Using their knowledge, ideas, and desires, 30 eighth graders developed a new design for this underused land.

The exhibition details the students’ working process, shares the story of Hazel Johnson and the history of environmental justice at Altgeld Gardens, and presents a 16-foot diorama that maps their creative vision for a community green space that serves as a connection to the proposed Red Line extension to 130th Street.

About
At the National Public Housing Museum, Project Greenway is presented in conversation with the exhibition Living in the Shade: Open Space and Public Housing. It is organized by Collective Learning Lab and Aldridge Elementary School with lead artist, Larry Peyton II.
